“The student demonstrates that he values relationships with diverse individuals, cultures, and ideas that result in acts of evangelism, dialogue, application, and service that are biblical, courageous, and compassionate.

Purpose

Because I have been blessed by experience working with people culturally diverse from me…

I want to help prepare teams from U.S. churches to engage well culturally in overseas mission trips.

STRATEGIES

1. I will approach leadership in each country to learn more about each of their country cultures in order to communicate it more fully.

2. I will assist one Country in creating a cultural training for teams coming to serve with them.

3. I will work with new churches preparing to go overseas and serve in order for them to understand cross cultural work more fully.

RESOURCES

1. I will use the resources of Josiah Venture to prepare this team.

2. I will spend time talking with our teammates in each culture in order to learn about and understand their culture better.

MEASUREMENTS

All teams will be in place and prepared to go serve the summer of 2025.

Reflection Statement

As I reflect on the cultural engagement area of growth, I believe I accomplished this through growing my knowledge in this area. My strategy involved reaching out to the leader of each country team in our organization, to have conversations about their culture to enhance my ability to communicate with U.S. churches preparing for mission trips to our countries. I played a key role in helping Slovakia develop cultural training and worked closely with churches as they prepared for cross-cultural missions.

The artifacts I submitted include a comprehensive list of countries with cultural and religious insights based on interviews with country leaders, a record of the churches I assisted in their cultural preparation this year, and an e-learning course I co-developed for teams serving in Slovakia.

Originally, my goal was to lead a team from my local church and guide them through the experience of serving in another culture. However, with my wife’s pregnancy, I won’t be able to travel this summer. As a result, I shifted my focus toward concentrating on helping churches engage more effectively in cross-cultural settings. This shift became a valuable opportunity to expand my knowledge of countries like Moldova, Montenegro, and Estonia among others. Looking ahead, I hope to travel more, serve in diverse cultural contexts, and deepen my understanding of culture not just through interviews, but through direct experience and immersion in each of our countries.

Life Long Development Statement

I will continue developing my cultural engagement by working with churches and teams preparing to serve overseas. Through my experiences, I have learned the importance of understanding different cultures, and I want to deepen this by traveling to more countries. While I have interviewed leaders and developed training materials, I hope to become more fully integrated by serving in different contexts. This experience has expanded my knowledge beyond familiar countries, and I aim to keep learning. Moving forward, I hope for more opportunities to engage firsthand, helping churches navigate cultural differences. My goal is to develop a well-rounded understanding of cultures within our JV Countries and improve cultural training for future teams.
